New connections produce new images which may lead us towards personal and communal integrity; or may lead us in tragic ways towards sickness and disease. More often than not what which is new is new by virtue of being a new combination, mixture, union, connection, or organization of previously existing elements; rather than by virtue of being new elements which had not existed before. In these consideration the "elements" include ideas, ideals, values, and goals; and the leaders who embody them. The new may also include new technologies which arise out of new combinations which lead to new ways to manipulate objects and people; and which thus generate new opportunities, possibilities, and dilemmas pertaining to the use of the new technologies. New technologies do not resolve dilemmas or conflicts; more often than not, they generate more dilemmas and conflicts than they resolve. New technologies do not provide means to avoid tragedies; for tragedies have to do with hidden conflicts between ideas, ideals, values and goals which are served in conflicting ways by people who are using technologies to the best of their abilities. Tragedies are not by unrecognized, unarticulated and unresolved conflicts among our ideas, ideals, values and goals. We need new images of what it might be like to be a community characterized by personal and communal integrity. The new images are likely to involve new combinations, mixtures, unions and connections of existing ideas, ideals, values and goals; with different priorities among them than we have traditionally had.
