In false religion people pretend to know and be certain in order to conceal their insecurity. They do not distinguish between facts and assumptions, between beliefs and wishes, between reality and appearances. They pretend that they have not made assumptions in terms of which they perceive reality, and think that their perceptions correspond to how reality is apart from their perceptions. They deny the key role that they as persons and their choices make in determining their perceptions of reality. They "objectify" their perceptions and fail to own their role in making choices which lead them to have their perceptions in the way which they do. In true religion, people do not engage in pretense to conceal their insecurity. They openly and honestly share their insecurity in contexts in which all participants are free to be vulnerable; and so are secure in spite of their personal imperfections, uncertainties, and insecurity. In true religion, people are open and honest about uncertainties, ambiguities, paradoxes, mysteries, mistakes, and imperfections. True religion helps believers to create secure contexts in which people are free to be vulnerable as accepted members of the community, who are not under threat of rejection from the community.
