This is especially so when the ORGANIZATIONS and INSTITUTIONS which pass alienative judgement upon the dysfunctional behaviors of the addicts and codependents are addictive/codependent ORGANIZATIONS which are highly respected in the community. It is often falsely assumed that highly respected ORGANIZATIONS and INSTITUTIONS (churches, schools, colleges, universities, law enforcement agencies, etc.) cannot be involved in addictive and codependent behaviors. Those individuals who are alienated by such respected centers of judgment themselves tend to pass judgement upon themselves and find it impossible to see that those ORGANIZATIONS and INSTITUTIONS which pass judgement upon and alienate individuals are themselves institutionally much like the individuals upon which they pass judgement; i.e., trapped in addictive and codependent patterns of thought, feeling, attitude, and behavior---and dishonest about those patterns. Addicts and codependents (because of their diseased patterns of thought, feeling, attitudes and behavior) are prone to lack healthy self esteem; and so lack the self confidence to recognize, name and describe addictive and codependent behavior in highly respected ORGANIZATIONS and INSTITUTIONS. Addicts and codependents are prone to regard themselves as embodying all the defects which must explain their difficulties; and yet in insecure defensive maneuvers they deny to themselves and others the defects which they perceive to exist within themselves as the explanation of their difficulties. Thus they do not recognize, name, or describe the addictive/codependent patterns of the organizations/institutions within which they are imprisoned. Organizational/institutional/system addiction and codependence are central to the maintenance of personal addiction and codependence. Each dysfunctional pattern of thoughts, attitudes, perceptions and behaviors tends to obscure and confuse similar patterns in other individuals and in other organizations/institutions. Healing in one domain is nearly impossible in the absence of healing in other domains. Healing in all domains must occur in parallel to be effective and enduring. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
