Sometimes knowledge confers the power to be successfully manipulative, other times knowledge does not confer power to be successfully manipulative. Some kinds of knowledge enable people to be manipulative, other kinds of power do not enable people to be manipulative. There are various kinds of knowledge and various kinds of manipulation. There is risk in being intimate, in that a manipulator may gain knowledge which will be useful in achieving some form of control. There is risk in avoiding all intimacy, in that in the absence of meaningful intimacy there is a lack of knowledge in terms of which to understand what it means to be truly and meaningfully human. Not all knowledge which is communicated in intimacy can be used in manipulative ways; some knowledge which is communicated in intimacy does not yield to use and abuse. The challenge is to facilitate the communication of the latter kinds of knowledge, and the understanding which it enables; while avoiding the risks of facilitating manipulation by communicating the kinds of knowledge which can be used and abused. Not all kinds of knowledge can be communal knowledge. Not all knowledge can be confirmed by others as being reliable knowledge. Some private kinds of knowledge can be validated by continuing experiences, even though the knowledge remains essentially private, not able to be communicated and confirmed in a communal way. Whether or not knowledge is meaningful depends upon the extent to which it is integrated into daily activities, thoughts, perceptions, emotions and being. Such integration need not entail use in the sense of used in facilitation of manipulations. Integration of knowledge may entail a shift in ideals, values and goals; rather than a shift in technology by which to seek to achieve particular ideals, values and goals through manipulations. Some knowledge pertains to respecting limits and being honest about limitations. People who do not respect limits and who are not honest about limitations demonstrate such limitations to those people who are willing to respect limits and be honest about limitations. When communities do not respect and are not honest about limitations, its members suffer individually and collectively. We need to find ways to know each other intimately with security and integrity.
