In each "family" there may be dysfunctional relationships involving an absence of love, power and/or justice. In each "family" there may be a pattern of (1) dis-integration due to collusions, addictions, codependencies and/or (2) integration due to a balanced pattern of love, power and justice. In each "family" integration and disintegration relates to the amount and quality of communication among the members of the "family"; is the communication open, honest, mutual, balanced, relevant, timely, passionate, vulnerable and intimate; or is the communication secretive, tacit, implicit, deceptive, authoritarian, unilateral, tangential, procrastinative, flat, defensive and formal? In each "family" it makes a great deal of difference whether emotions are (or are not) freely claimed, owned, affirmed, expressed, and respected in integrative ways whenever they are present; or whether emotions are (or are not) rejected, disowned, denigrated, repressed and ridiculed in disintegrative ways on many occasions of ignorance, misunderstanding embarrassment and conflict. In each "family" it makes a great deal of difference whether or not clear distinctions are made between healthy and unhealthy patterns of thought, desire, assumptions, beliefs, convictions, fears, and behavior. When there are no clear bases for such distinctions being offered via role models, principles, theory, stories, drama, novels, song, dance, ballet and other media---then---the confusing of healthy and unhealthy realities is bound to bind the members of the community to their various prisons of mind, body and soul; both individually and corporately. In each "family" there may be interactions among "members" of the "family" which are parallel to the disintegrative interactions which characterize the addictive/codependent families that are dominated by collusive games of mutual self deception, manipulation, perfectionism, control, confusion, repression, dishonesty and degenerating self esteem. Insights gained in recovery of addicts and codependents may well lead to parallel insights in parallel situations each each type of "family". (c) 2005 by Paul A.
