It is important to acknowledge the appropriate role of each, and yet not confuse them with each other. In some instances we may offer a cognitive affirmation which is recognizably parallel to an affective affirmation; e.g., cognitively saying that some value is an important value might be recognized as being parallel to that embodying value within an intimate relationship. In some instances we may offer an affective affirmation which is recognizably parallel to cognitive statement. Translating an affective affirmation into a cognitive statement and then back will not necessarily yield the original affective affirmation. Translating a cognitive affirmation into an affective affirmation and then back will not necessarily yield the original 3 cognitive statement. Cognitive affirmations usually take the form of cognitive statements. Affective affirmations are not statements in the same sense that cognitive affirmations are statements. Each affirmation has its unique character which is different from the character of other affirmations; yet the import of one kind of affirmation may be parallel to the import of another kind of affirmation. Often affirmations have to do with trust, worth, importance, caring, value, interest, support and attention. An affective affirmation may elicit trust in a way which i parallel to a cognitive statement about trust. An affective affirmation may affirm the worth of a person and personal relationships with the person---in a way which is parallel to a cognitive statement about the worth of them. An affective affirmation may point to the importance of aspects of personal relationships which are difficult to put into words in any convincing way. An affective affirmation may demonstrate care which cannot be stated effectively in a cognitive way. A cognitive statement may state the relative values which are placed upon competitive considerations with a clarity which cannot be offered through affective affirmations. An affective affirmation may demonstrate an interest in some reality which cannot be convincingly affirmed in cognitive statements. The affective support of a personal presence may be far more convincing than cognitive statements of intended support. It is not as easy to be dishonest in affective affirmations, as it is easy to be dishonest in cognitive statements. Thus people are appropriately less inclined to take cognitive statements at "face value" because how honest the statements are cannot be read from the appearance of their "face". Affective manipulation is more easily recognized than is cognitive manipulation. Affective affirmations entail the vulnerability of intimacy, while cognitive affirmations may be made from a safe distance. Cognitive affirmations may not involve mutual vulnerability between persons who participate in the communication. People often participate more intimately with each other in affective affirmations, than in cognitive statements which are often broadcast and received across a separating distance. Affective affirmations are interpreted by an older part of the mental processes than are cognitive affirmations. Affective affirmations relate intimately to emotions such as fear, endearment, apprehension and love. Cognitive affirmations may relate to intellectual considerations which are nearly devoid of emotional aspects much of the time. Logical considerations do not always elicit emotional responses; but may do so when the considerations indicate consequences which are of personal concern. For members of a community to enjoy both personal and communal integrity, they must understand with integrity each other's affective and cognitive affirmations; and feel that it is safe to trust such affirmations as being reliable in parallel ways. When affirmations appear to be contrary to each other, insecurity and apprehension follow; and disease follows in the sense of not being at ease and in the sense of illnesses which are the natural consequences in disintegrative ways. Affective and cognitive affirmations may be related to each other, yet be different from each other. It is important to acknowledge the appropriate role of each and yet not confuse them with each other. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
