Our personal and communal integrity are threatened by any circumstances which lead us to regard the manipulation of the truth as a prudent technique; whether it be through outright lies, or through communications of any kind which lead others to believe within themselves what is not true for us or for them. We have an instinctive need for integrity, coherence, truth. When we see people act in ways which threaten our sense of integrity, coherence and/or truth, we feel instinctively that we cannot trust them; we are thereby alienated from them. When we act and communicate in ways which make us feel that we lack integrity, coherence, worth and/or inner truth, we feel instinctively what we cannot trust our own selves, and we are thereby alienated from our own selves. When such alienation and disintegration occur to us as children who feel the "truth" more than articulate the "truth", the "truth" we feel is deeply embedded in us in ways which cannot be changed through just the use of words and abstract symbols. The emotional "truth" which we internalize as children cannot be amended through purely intellectual, cognitive, rational, mathematical, scholarly and other similar procedures. The healthy amendments to our misleading childish "truths" can only be accomplished through procedures which are powerful in the ways which embedded the childish "truths"; in affective, emotional, loving, supportive, and sympathetic ways. Recovery from the misleading childish "truths" of our dysfunctional families of origin and families within, is a balanced process which draws on all dimensions of life, not from any exclusive domain which is regarded as superior in some childish way.
