The mirror image of that assumption is that which says that defective persons should be rejected until they fix themselves to make themselves acceptable. The corollary of these assumptions is that it is o.k. to show respect for people's acceptance of these assumptions. People who play the roles of victims often do so by accepting these assumptions and demonstrating the consequences as the victims thereof. In all of these tragic transactions dishonesty plays a central role. It is dishonest to pretend that technical fixes can correct the alienation which flows from manipulative human actions and reactions, which are technical attempts to solve non-technical human dilemmas that are not technical problems. Reflexive relationship-dilemmas are not technical problems, and cannot be fixed through reacting to them in technical ways. Addictions are compulsive patterns of attempting to fix human alienation with technical solutions to dilemmas which are not problems. Emotional honesty is essential to creatively responding to the dilemmas inherent in alienation; yet emotional honesty is reflexive in character, and so it is taboo to people who are trapped in the collusive games of self deception, games which perpetuate the pretenses of the objective paradigm. Technocrats in the service of the objective paradigm cannot permit themselves to be emotionally honest as they are confronted with the dilemmas of human alienation; so they react with technical behaviors and seek fixes as addicts do. Jesus is reported to have observed that we shall know the truth and that the truth will make us free. What truth? Perhaps he knew and was suggesting that when we know the reflexive truth about ourselves and our closest friends, we shall be free to be ourselves and to enjoy personal and communal integrity. Knowledge of objective truths does not by itself set us free. Objective knowledge can be used in manipulative ways which are alienative/disintegrative and which imprison us. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
