No medical professional can intervene and gain control over our mental diseases in the way medical professionals can intervene and gain control over many diseases caused by bacteria and viruses. Many mental diseases are occasioned by infectious attitudes and thought patterns which professionals cannot control. The standard medical paradigm is inappropriate to dealing with some mental diseases, because some mental diseases are more fully reflexive in character than are the diseases around which the medical paradigm developed. Many mental diseases are due to personal and communal thought patterns and attitudes which are essentially dishonest; they are diseases of dishonesty. It is impossible to be at-ease when you are engaged in dishonest games of mutual self deception. People who are engaged in essentially dishonest life styles cannot be at ease with integrity. They are very susceptible to dis-eases which easily undermine the residual integrity of essentially dishonest people. Dishonest attempts to control such diseases often involve in the very attitudes which occasion the diseases. Recovery from diseases which are occasioned by dishonest life styles is impossible without a radical effort to regain personal and communal integrity through a radical re-dedication to honesty in dealing with the distresses which the diseases occasion. Recovery involves an open and honest recognition of the role which dishonesty has played in occasioning the distresses of the diseases. In the face of such diseases of dishonesty it is futile to go to a professional who pretends to be able to gain control over the disease without confronting the essentially dishonest life style which occasioned the development of the communal contexts within which the disease readily grows worse and worse. The pretense of such a professional is part of the communal life style which occasions such diseases! (c) 2005 by Paul A.
