Through work the disorder/entropy of confusion is reduced in the process of honest clarification. It takes energy to do useful work in replacing patterns of collusive dishonesty with patterns of honest dialogue. It is not easy to escape from the prisons of confused attitudes/thinking. Addicts and their supporting cast of codependents lack personal and communal integrity because they are not being honest with themselves and/or each other. In the absence of honesty with yourself and/or others there can be no coherence, wholeness, integrity. If you are dishonest with others in efforts to manipulate them through clever techniques; soon you believe your own misleading stories and drift into dishonesty with yourself, unable to tell the difference between truth and falsehood. The process of recovery from addiction/codependence is the process of working on confronting your own patterns of misleading statements/behaviors. Without honest confrontation of dishonest patterns of statements and behaviors there is no recovery; and such confrontation is hard work. It requires learning how to own one's own dishonesty and to acknowledge its reality. One cannot deal effectively with one's own dishonesty until one is honest about the reality of one's own dishonesty. We cannot overcome our own confusion so long as we claim that we are not confused. We cannot overcome our own dishonesty until we are honest and admit that we have been dishonest. It is work to own and deal with what we have done so long, because we are in the presence of friends who are unwilling to admit to our joint participation in dishonest collusive patterns of statements and behaviors which have been systematically misleading in efforts to achieve some dishonest goal. A prophet is a person who has personal integrity and seeks to show the way to communal integrity. A prophet sees the truth clearly in the midst of patterns of collusive behavior, and reveals the truth with courage. Prophets are often ill treated by people who are the victims of the diseases of addiction/codependence, and are threatened by the truths to which the prophet points. Those of us who ill treat prophets would do well to seek to understand the truths to which prophets point; and will not get well in any program of recovery until they seek the truth which can be found only when we acknowledge its eternal presence.
