In the absence of unconditional love people try to control each other through the threat of and use of conditional rewards and acceptance, ambiguity, punishments, coercion, violence, rejection, ridicule, etc. In the absence of unconditional acceptance into dialogue and community, people become the victims of shame and preoccupation with guilt because they cannot accept themselves in the absence of meaningful acceptance by significant others. They come to view those things which are most distinctively their own as unacceptable: their own bodies, emotions, creative insights and clarifying perceptions. They thus cannot think clearly or learn anything of real value from their own experiences, bodies, emotions, creative insights or perceptions. Real learning and the development of authentic wisdom is blocked. In such a state it is natural that confusion, disorder, violence, destruction, disintegration, and increasing entropy are common and feed on themselves in exponential ways. It takes concentrated amounts of energy and work directed in wise ways to reduce the confusion, disorder, violence, destruction and entropy; and to promote meaningful integration. This is unlikely to occur in the absence of an acknowledgment of the ultimate importance of authentic love with its understanding of the role of unconditional acceptance into community dialogue with sympathetic listening. It is important to recognize the prerequisites to meaningful learning and education; else there can be no liberal education which meaningfully liberates. In the absence of the appropriate prerequisites no amount of effort and sophisticated technology will be of any avail. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
