A common set of attitudes, assumptions, values, ideals, etc. leads to very impersonal relationships between students and those who ostensibly lead the learning processes of the students. The character of such personal relationships is that they are depersonalized, and create a depersonalized context for depersonalized learning. Such depersonalized learning does not liberate students to live meaningful personal lives. We need to be more attentive to the set of attitudes, assumptions, values, ideals, etc. which occasions the variety of personal relationships between and among students and professors. The quality of the personal relationships are as important as the technical competency which is offered. The quality of the personal relationships needs attention equal to the attention given to technical competency. It is not enough to have competency in abstract concepts regarding personal relationships. What is necessary is experience in being meaningfully involved in healthy personal relationships; such involvement is not an academic matter which is captured in its essence through scholarly study. Effective education is lead by people who are affectively involved in healthy personal relationships. People who are not experienced in healthy personal relationships are unable to lead students in healthy ways to learn how to cope and lead meaningful personal lives. Technical competency can lead to technical disaster in the absence of experienced familiarity with healthy personal relationships. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
