It is another thing to respect the same person for their performance, acting, behavior, achievements, values, ideals and setting of priorities. It is wise to respect a person as a unique person in spite of their performance, acting, behavior, achievements, values, ideals and/or setting of priorities. It is unwise to respect a person's performance, acting, behavior, achievements, values ideals and/or setting of priorities just because they are a person of great power and influence. There are two different kinds of respect: (1) Respect for persons as unique persons who are members of the human community because they are members of the human community, (2) Respect for the particulars of performances, acting, behaviors, achievements, values, ideals and/or setting of priorities of particular persons. It is dangerous to be confused regarding the two different kinds of respect. Respect for performance and its like should not be granted out of a desire to grant respect to unique persons as persons. It is dangerous to respect the leadership of a political leader, just because the person is a member of the human race or powerful; because members of the human race often mislead people. It is also dangerous to show no personal respect for confused members of the human race whose performance is confused. Without proper acceptance as members of the human race, such persons cannot transcend their confusion and disintegrative behaviors which threaten the integrity of their community as a whole. Acceptance of and respect for confused members of the human race is essential to recovery of personal and communal integrity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
