A purely theoretical understanding of the diseases does not offer the kind of encouragement which can be offered by someone who is a living demonstration of the possibilities of recovery. Particularly for the codependent the possibilities of becoming involved in such helpful dialogue offers real dangers of relapse back into unhealthy patterns of over- responsibility to the detriment of the integrity of the codependent. The process of recovery is not a sudden event after which there is no danger of relapse. The process of recovery is a slow process and the danger of relapse is real. It may help codependents to help each other in the company of others who can recognize slippage into over- responsibility patterns; e.g., in Al-anon Twelve-Step Programs. The recovering codependent has often been an isolated person who has not had the clarity of vision to see the process of slippage into over-responsible behavior. A guard against relapse is to avoid isolation through regular participation in groups as structured groups of people involved in Twelve-Step Programs. At the same time there is danger of becoming dishonestly addicted to Twelve Step Program meetings of a fix of choice. That danger needs to be honestly talked about with non-addicts (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
