The self which is conscious is conscious of a self which is not identical with the self which is conscious. The self which is known is not identical with the self which knows. In self consciousness there is an image of the kind of separation between known and knower which is experienced in relationships between different people. Jack and Jill know each other as separated from each other. Jack and Jill know themselves in somewhat the same way in which they know each other. There is Jack the knower and Jack the known; Jill the knower and Jill the known. Different kinds of self consciousness differ from each other in the kinds of relationships between the knower and the known; just as different kinds of inter- personal relationships differ from each other in the kinds of ways in which the persons involved relate to each other. Interpersonal relationships may be characterized by mutual acceptance and intimate dialogue, by judgmentalism, by tolerance, amusement, charity, rejection, acceptance, etc. in differing manners. So also may self consciousness differ from person to person; according to the nature of the relationship between the known self and the knower self. Personal integrity has to do with self consciousness which is integrated. People who lack personal integrity are characterized by fragmented self consciousness which is associated with low self esteem, self rejection, self judgmentalism, weak self-dialogue, low self tolerance, dis-satisfaction with self, etc. Personal disintegration has to do with the breakdown of internal communications among the various component of the whole self of a person's self conscious internal relationships. People differ from each other in their conceptions of what are appropriate kinds of self consciousness. Interpersonal relationships are characterized by different kinds of judgments about each other's kinds of self- consciousness. Jack may be either accepting or judgmental about Jill's way of regarding her own self. Jill may be thrilled or displeased with how Jack accepts or judges her way of regarding her self. Interpersonal relationships are essentially reflexive in character. Interpersonal relationships are not primarily objective in character. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
