Some systems of values are quite provincial and limited in the scope of integrity which they promote and maintain; they are personally or culturally self centered, promoting a provincial integrity at the immediate expense of intimate associates in a zero sum competitive game. Such systems of values attend to only a limited range of knowledge regarding reality and human relationships. They do not merit respect. Systems of values which merit respect promote both personal and communal integrity in less provincial ways. They promote and maintain the integrity of a more comprehensive range of being, through respect for a wider and more tolerant range of knowledge regarding reality and human relationships. The survival value of any system of values, ideals and ethical guidance depends upon the scope of the integration which is implicit in the system. The survival-value of a system does not depend upon its pretenses, upon its claims; but rather upon the scope of integrity which is implicit in the system. The wider the scope of integration, the less pretentious the system is likely to be. Modesty and humility are characteristics more often found in systems which promote comprehensive integrity, than in systems which promote provincial integrity. Any system which survives in a narrow way at the expense of the integrity of its environment, will ultimately destroy the environment upon which it depends for its existence. Any system which survives at the expense of open and honest dialogue about the experiences of the members of the system, will sow the seeds of its own destruction in the disintegration of its own knowledge base. Systems of ideals and values which repress open and honest dialogue lack integrity, and promote the disintegration of the community and persons who support the system; they are self disintegrative, and so can not survive for long. They promote disorder in their environment, and so undermine their chance for survival. Systems of ideals and values which have a chance of long term survival promote integration in the widest possible environment for each kind of environment: spiritual, physical, social, religious, political, economic, scientific, temporal, etc. Social systems cannot survive in violation of the second law of thermodynamics regarding increasing entropy, chaos and disorder within all ISOLATED systems. Isolation leads to disorder and confusion. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
