The insecure exclusive person is prone to misinterpret any complementary affirmation as a denial of the validity of what the exclusive person affirms, and so will work within the exclusive paradigm to prove the complementary affirmation false and misleading. If both persons are exclusive in their views of the truths of their complementary affirmations, both are likely to misinterpret each other's affirmations, not recognizing them as part of the pattern of defending their own insecure positions. They can not actively listen to what each other is affirming, because they are consumed with defensive activity in an effort to achieve security for their own exclusive position. They can not truly visit each other's homes because they are preoccupied in making their own homes secure against each other. They can not truly achieve the security they seek because it can be enjoyed only through the very kind of vulnerability which they are seeking to defend themselves against. People who are addicted to their own narrow point of view feel a compulsive need to deny complementary affirmations which can be regarded as significant only if their own narrow point of view is NOT recognized as being comprehensive. To bolster their own narrow affirmations addicts tend to overstate the importance of their point of view to compensate for their lack of self esteem and lack of self confidence. People of low self esteem can gain a sense of importance in knowing important truths which other people do not know and/or do not appreciate. Such a sense of self importance is protected if those of low self esteem are careful not to spread the knowledge too generously; keeping it mysterious to all but their own kind. This may be why scientist do not seek to become fully helpful teachers. If they were too successful in teaching science it would cease to be mysterious, would be known by many, and scientists would not be able to bolster their low self esteem by the knowledge that they know what few others are bright enough to learn.
