Addicts need the enabling help of codependents. Codependents need the need of the addicts for enabling helpers. They cooperate not in strength but in weakness which is progressive. Their relationship is one of desperate dependency without meaningful hope. Modern people are often addicted to scientists who serve as codependents. Modern people are in need of the enabling help which scientists and supporting technocrats offer to provide, and which deaden the insecurity of not having self esteem rooted in any personal ground of being. Scientists find their fulfillment in helping to provide the focal impersonal substances, services and activities for addictive behavior: material goods, certain knowledge, expanded understanding, increased control, weapons of defense, etc. Scientists do not help people transcend the addictive process because they are codependents in the addictive process. Scientist need to be needed by the addicts who focus upon the goods and services which scientists provide. Science does not provide the foundation for the transcendence of the addictive process, because scientists are committed to objectivity; to detachment from the objects of their study. Scientists are participants in an addictive process and can not detach themselves from themselves in an objective way. Part of their addictive process is to be dishonest about the nature of the process. The pretense of being objective can be used as part of the collusive games of mutual self deception which are central to the addictive process. People who are ultimately committed to appearing to be objective are not well suited to engage in the reflective/reflexive behavior which is essential to promoting both personal and communal integrity within communities which are disintegrating due to the various manifestations of the addictive process.
