To be integrative each such challenge must be firmly grounded in its own kind of integrity. A challenge which flows from disintegration within an individual as such, or from disintegration of a community as such, is a challenge which will itself tend to be disintegrative. To be effective, integrative moves need to be balanced. Integration will not be balanced if individuals seek to advance the cause of integration just on the individual level; ignoring the need for communal integration in a way coherent with efforts to advance personal integration. If private relationships ignore the needs to the community as a whole, private efforts to achieve integration will fail due to the disintegration of the community within which the private relationships must exist. If efforts to further communal integrity ignore the needs of private relationships, the community will naturally disintegrate because communal integrity is dependent upon the cooperation of individuals of personal integrity. Adverse secrecy and manipulative efforts do not promote integrity. There are better ways of promoting integrity. The problem is to realize what they are. Genuine integrative efforts move forward in ways which keep progress in personal integration in balance with progress in communal integration. Changes which are not integrated tend to be disintegrative, for incoherent changes tend to be threatening and so elicit fear and disintegrative defensiveness, violence, resentment, rejection, excommunication, etc. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
