Their belief is consistent with their belief that proper behavior is motivated by factors outside each person, by the requirements of the community. In their view proper behavior is defined by community standards and enforced by the community. Apart from communal coercion, they believe, individuals would fall into patterns of improper, immoral, unethical and illegal behavior; for such falling is the natural thing to do. Communal coercion is the only way to keep such natural behavior from occurring. It is only natural for man-made order to degenerate into natural disorder. Constant maintenance of the order which has been created by man is necessary in order to do God's will. Thus members of an orderly community have the right and responsibility to coerce each other into conforming to the communal standards of proper behavior. God works through man to create the order which God naturally could not create. Only through man can God create the order that should exist. Man's natural tendencies are perverse. Man must be coerced to do what is right for man to do. Thus some men who have the superior knowledge to know what man should do are called upon by God to coerce other men who are perverse to do what is right. This all seems rather disorderly, and lacking in integrity. Perhaps God created man with a natural integrity which is fulfilled in communities of integrity. Perhaps the disorder comes from some men seeking to coerce other men to compromise their personal integrity to conform to what the self-righteous believe they have a right to coerce others to do. Disorder naturally follows from the violation of natural integrity; the violation of integrity leads to disintegration. How can anybody claim the right to do violence to personal integrity through coercion---to force people to do that which leads to disintegration? How can coercion lead to communal integrity by doing violence to personal integrity? (c) 2005 by Paul A.
