That which is important is owned. That which is not important is not important because it can not be owned. Only that which is important can be owned, and it can be owned if it is important. This all seems very reasonable and much follows. Relationships with others are obviously important; it is who you know that determines success, right? Prestige and reputations depend upon with whom you are in relationships. Human relationships are clearly important; therefore, because you can own what is important you can own personal relationships. Ownership may be by individuals, joint, or corporate. Since relationships can be owned, they can also be bought and sold---under mutually agreeable contractual terms, of course. That which is owned must be well defined, thus relationships must be well defined in contractual terms. The more important the relationships, the more clear and complete must be the definitions. It is very important that the terms of ownership be clear and there be no conflict over the terms of ownership; thus the terms of relationships must be clearly defined, and not subject to unilateral modification. Ownership implies the right to control, especially if ownership is more than 51 percent. The major owner of a relationship has a right to control the relationship. It is clear than in a possessive society the concept of right of ownership, if applied to relationships, will constrain the kinds of relationships which will be respected in the society. Relationships which can not be owned and controlled will not be respected or tolerated, for such relationships will threaten what is most important to the most influential member of a possessive society. Thus the members of the society will be ultimately concerned regarding the definitions of any relationships; e.g., vital sexual ones, which might threaten the collusions and taboos which give the society its appearances of significance and meaning. Relationships which can not be owned and controlled must not be permitted to gain respect, or to survive for long. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
