Community is not possible without personal integrity. Personal integrity is not possible without community. Both are essential and interdependent. To compromise one is to undermine the other. The pretense of one involves the pretense of the other, and so undermines both. Integrity can not be achieved by pretense for pretense is the antithesis of integrity. When appearances become ultimately important then integrity is totally lost. When what others think and feel about you is more important to you than what you really are, then appearances become ultimately important both personal and communal integrity are lost. Being coherent with personal and communal integrity is more important then appearing to be respectable in ways which satisfy conformal standards of acceptability. People who are willing to excommunicate you for failing to conform are not worthy of personal respect; they lack personal integrity and sacrifice communal integrity in excommunicating people. There is little point in maintaining false appearances to earn their shallow respect. Communities should respect and support only that which genuinely respects and supports both personal and communal integrity. Ideals and values which ultimately lead to communal disintegration are not worthy of communal respect and support. The difference between the two needs to be made evident, and people (prophets) who reveal the differences are worthy of great respect and support. Yet, it is usually such people who are crucified for their creative efforts, for they undermine the taboos and collusions of the powerful members of each society which values conformity more than creativity, judgment more than reconciliation, excommunication more than forgiveness, and evil more than love.
