Personal rejections do not contribute to holding a community together. Personal rejections are supportive of disintegrative ideals which require violence and coercion as instruments to be used in their service. Once respect has been accorded to disintegrative instruments it becomes impossible to rationalize that respect in coherent integrative ways because disintegrative instruments do not relate to the ideas, ideals and members of a coherent community in a coherent way. People who have committed themselves to the use of disintegrative instruments continue to seek to rationalize their commitment, and find that they can do so only in terms of disintegrative ideals and/or absolutizing their instrumental ideals; their disintegrative justification. It then becomes impossible to coherently relate effects to their causes and it is impossible to evaluate the technologies of coercion and violence; they have become idols worthy of worship regardless of their consequences. Those people who are committed to the technologies of coercion and violence are in practice idolaters unable to make coherent evaluations of their technologies. It is not enough to be idealistic, sincere, committed and willing to make personal sacrifices. One may be committed to disintegrative ideals which lead inevitably to tragedies which are compounded by idealism, sincerity, commitment and powerful high technologies. The improvement of technologies is not a means to the avoidance of tragedies occasioned by idealism, sincerity, commitment and powerful high technologies. The improvement of technologies is not a means to the avoidance of tragedies occasioned by disintegrative idealism. It is impossible to evaluate technologies objectively because making value judgments involve behaving non- objectively; i.e., in self-referential ways. There is no technology by which to avoid tragedy because tragedy pertains making commitments to disintegrative ideals. Technologies have to do with serving ideals already chosen. Technocrats can not perceive their ideals as being disintegrative ideals and so improve technologies to serve tragic disintegrative ideals. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
