The businessman uses feedback to control purchase of replacement merchandise; information about what is selling well goes to the purchasing department to help make decisions about what additional merchandise to purchase for future sales. In manufacturing automatic measuring devices monitor dimensions of produced goods and information is feedback to the part of the machine which controls that dimension so as to keep the product within specifications. In each instance selected information is feedback to the part of the machine which controls that dimension so as to keep the product within specifications. In each instance selected information is feedback in a way which provides some control over a process. In some situations feedback leads accidentally to undesired amplifications. Sounds amplified by a public address system may feedback to the microphone location with an amplitude louder than the original sounds. Such feedback is accidentally selective as regards frequency. Only one or a few frequencies of sound are feedback louder than the original sound; and those sounds generate a very undesirable squawk which overwhelms the sounds of the speaker who may have made the original sounds. In another situation such selective feedback is deliberately used to generate a strong signal of just one frequency in a device called a "signal generator". The effect of feedback depends upon the situation, the selection of just what information/effect is feedback, and the consequences of that selective feedback. Often situations involve accidental feedback mechanisms which are not recognized by the people who are being affected and/or participating in the feedback process. The selection process may be dominated by ideals and values which have not been thoughtfully examined in terms of the consequences to which they lead through the feedback process. Feedback may thoughtlessly lead to amplifications of social tendencies which are genuinely tragic in their long-term consequences. If we are to avoid long-term tragic consequences we need to carefully examine the feedback process in which we are participants. Such an examination can not be objective because it is essentially a reflective and reflexive process. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
