The defensive kind of security is a defective kind of security, because it leads to arms races which give evidence of a basic insecurity on the part of the participants. The insecurity of people who are always on the defensive indicates the values of security with freedom to be vulnerable, genuine security. The value of any particular kind of security depends upon the advantages which it offers in comparison to the costs which it generates. The defensive kind of security leads to costly arms races, social insecurity, the threats of war, and the disintegration of the foundations for genuine security. No matter how attractive defensive security appears to paranoid people it is not a good buy. It is dangerous for a community to turn to paranoid people to ask them to lead the community in its efforts to achieve security. Paranoids will lead in ways which will undermine personal and communal integrity, and so undermine the possibility of genuine security. Genuine security occasions the freedom to be vulnerable. Paranoids are incapable of enjoying the freedom to be vulnerable. They can not imagine genuine security and so lead people away from the ways which lead to genuine security, and lead instead in the ways of fear which they do know very well. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
