Graduate school professors act as if they were being unbiased through a dedication to objectivity. To study an object objectively is to regard it without emotional involvement or personal commitment to it, as over against something else. To be objective in regarding something is to avoid prejudging it, as over against something else. To be objective is to avoid prejudice. By the nature of objectivity we can not be objective about our judgments. By the nature of all our judgments---we are prejudiced regarding our judgments; we have pre-judged all issues upon which we have already made a judgment. For this reason it is self deception to believe that we can be objective about our own judgments; it is logically impossible to do so, just as it is logically impossible to have dry water when the definition of "dry" is the absence of water. Our dedications and commitments flow from our judgments as to which ideals and values are worthy of our affirmations, time, and energy. Our dedications and commitments are expressions of our motivations, affections, emotions, passions, etc. Formal statements of dedication and/or commitment are rationalizations of non- verbal foci of our being. About such aspects of our being we can not be objective, and we deceive ourselves if we think and act as if we could be objective about such aspects of our being. Not even the unanimous agreement of others in a collusive game of mutual self-deception can make us be objective in our self regard of our dedications and commitments to total objectivity. We can not be objective about our being successful in our commitment to be objective. We can not be objective about our objectivity. We can not be objective about our selves or others who are important to us. Objectivity pertains only to objects and to people treated as if they were only objects. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
