Their relationships are not characterized by mutuality---because they dominate the relationship and other participants in those relationships. Dominant people tend to engage in various forms of coercion and violence, often so subtle form as to escape recognition even by the victims. Dominant people need submissive people who play the role of victim. Submissive people do not aspire to mutuality in relationships, they aspire to being participants in advantageous submissive relationships in which (for a consideration) they play the role of victim, to a dominant person who needs a victim. Dominant and submissive people do not share power equally, nor do they accord each other mutual respect with full regard for each other's being. Their relationships are contractual, rather than personal; each calculating the advantage to be gained by playing the respective roles. When dominance is what is desired, mutuality is sacrificed. When mutuality is what is desired, dominance is not sought; and power is shared as a common gift---used cooperatively in building both personal and communal integrity. Within I-Thou relationships the participants are empowered---because they do not covet power. Within I- Thou relationships people become fully human---by being who they are with their whole being, with integrity which builds community. Because they do not covet the power to dominate other people's thoughts, feelings and behavior---they are empowered to receive joy with personal and communal integrity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
