To be disciplined is to behave according to a pattern of behavior which transcends individual instincts, desires, fears, dispositions, etc. Objective behavior is behavior which is consensual; oriented toward convergent thinking, rather than towards eliciting idiosyncratic divergent perceptions generated in the imagination and fantasy of unique individuals. Thus an objective discipline is one which promotes consensual orientation towards what others can sense with communally convergent senses. The objective disciplines discourage focusing attention upon self-referential private insights and motivations. To be objective is to avoid involvement in self- referential behavior which might undermine the disciplined approach to the topic under consideration. Self- referential behavior includes indirect self-reference. If Jack loves Jill, then Jack is involved in indirect self- referential behavior when he makes reference to or becomes referred to Jill. By extension self-referential behavior includes all behavior which naturally leads to such obviously indirect self-referential behavior; e.g., all sexual behavior is indirectly self-referential in nature. It follows that to be objective involves avoidance of sexual behavior. Disciplined training in an objective discipline strives towards uniformly objective behavior on the part of both teachers and students. Objectivity cannot be maintained if students and teachers become intimately involved with each other as persons. Part of the discipline of learning an objective discipline is therefore to avoid personal intimacy or any behavior which might possible lead to personal intimacy. By extension, teachers and students must demonstrate their discipline by treating each other objectively and by avoiding any awareness of each other as sexual creatures. To be objective in training in objective disciplines the teachers and students must blind themselves to the objective fact that they are sexual creatures with possibilities for intimate personal relationships.
