Members of two cultures often do not understand each other's efforts at communication--- and regard each other with mutual suspicion, rather than with mutual understanding. Their best intentioned efforts to make themselves understood may be perceived as threatening, their efforts at analysis may be perceived as violent, their feelings as perverted, and expressions of affection as improper. With misunderstanding so deeply rooted it is exceedingly difficult to begin to develop mutual understanding and respect. The technical community and the personal community experience such difficulties of understanding. The difficulties are compounded by the fact that the members of the two communities are often split personalities who in their differing personalities play roles in the differing communities---without being able to serve as bridges between the two communities. Their split personalities prevent them from serving as bridges---and at the same time confound sincere efforts to understand the dynamics of misunderstanding. Observers see individuals who seem to be members of just one culture and so the presence of two cultures in which they participate is obscured. Anytime that a person with a split personality participates in correspondingly split cultures, that person may obscure the existence of the split cultures. The difficulties pertain to question of personal integrity. People with split personalities and cultures composed of people with split personalities lack integrity. Communication may be weak and dialogue virtually non-existent---even though information is broadcast on the part of all members. Even when members try to listen actively---they only broadcast on the part of all members. Even when members try to listen actively---they perceive all too often from a perspective which occasions misunderstanding of the person to whom they listen. It is not enough that there be persons who participate in each of the contrasting cultures---for such persons may be split personalities within whom the cultures are not in dialogue. Only people of full of integrity can help bridge the two culture dichotomy. Token participation in "the other" culture will contribute, but only in a limited way, to mutual understanding.
