There has been a tendency for the most elite teachers of such elite institutions to be the most respected teachers among the faculty---if not among the students. Since it is the faculty and former faculty members, called administrators, who pass out the rewards at elite institutions, it is the most elite teachers who prosper with financial rewards, respect, tenure, etc. Being elitist definitely pays well at such institutions. The less elite institutions have tended to respect the elite institutions, and have tended to copy the instructional patterns of the elite teachers. They aspire to the respect granted to the most elite institutions and teachers. Thus they try to copy the teaching patterns and teaching standards of the elite schools. This is usually done with little or not thought to the developmental stages and learning readiness of the students who should be served. What is the ultimate purpose of elite teachers? It can not be to maximized the number of students that learn the material of the amount of learning that the students enjoy. Such a purpose would tragically undermine the nature of the elite profession---it would cease to be an elite profession. Then where would be the respect, adulation, and reward which the elite teacher has grown accustomed to? No, the elite teacher can not be dedicated to effective instruction. That would be unthinkable. So it is not thought about, not even to the extent of consciously rejecting the possibility of teaching effectively. What then is the ultimate purpose of elite teachers? Clearly it must be to maintain the elite nature of their profession which rewards them with respect, pay, and tenure. The students who are permitted to enter the profession must be students who are dedicated to maintaining the elite nature of the profession---so that in retirement the younger generation will continue to bestow honor and respect upon the elite teacher of previous years. Thus the elite teacher go through motions of teaching which are really designed to select the right students for the honor of joining the elite profession. It is like an elite club to which only the right wealthy men are granted entrance. Of course such practices are justified in terms of maintaining high standards, but of course not of teaching effectiveness. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
