The exemplary behavior of the adult is not an embodiment of the missing value lesson---being rather the embodiment of the alternative value pattern which was internalized. The adult, may however, in an intellectual way recognize that it would have been more helpful to have internalized a value patter other than the pattern which was internalized. That recognition does not change the internalized value pattern---behavior will continue it terms of it, with few exceptions. Deliberate conscious actions may depart from the internalized value pattern; being guided by an alternative value pattern which is intellectually recognized as being more helpful. Yet most significant actions do not flow from deliberate conscious decisions which are based upon intellectual analysis. Thus most behavior will continue to be patterned by age- specific value lessons which were internalized in ways which can not be changed by intellectual behavior. Intellectual analysis may, however, lead to deliberate conscious actions which are conducive to non- intellectual behavior---which may lead to the internalization of the value patterns which are intellectually recognized as more helpful---than the value patterns which were internalized in the specific age interval. Such changes are likely to be minimal in the adult in most instances, but deliberate conscious actions by adults may promote the freedoms which are needed by children to learn integrative patterns through non- intellectual modeling of people who have internalized the integrative patterns. Intellectuals may recognize the need for children to mature emotionally in ways which they did not mature---and may help create conditions which are conducive to such emotional growth of the next generation. Intellectuals are not likely to serve as integrative role models for the next generation, however. Too often intellectuals have excelled in their intellectual endeavors at the expense of emotional development. It is not helpful for them to presume to be emotional experts on the basis of intellectual excellence. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
