Their understanding of the teacher's presentation is so inadequate that they can not formulate questions which the students and the teacher will regard as good questions. Few students want to get the reputation of asking bad questions. So most students in a typical class hesitate to ask questions. Only the best students feel free to ask questions. Only the good students ask good questions, and by their questions you can tell that they are good students. The weaker students who most need to ask questions are afraid to ask questions. Only fools make fools of themselves asking foolish questions. Smart students do not ask foolish questions. Thus confused students who are "smart" do not ask any questions. A foolish professor will take the lack of questions to mean that all the students fully understand the material, and move ahead at increased speed. A professor of greater concern and compassion will try to elicit questions, but in doing so will often give signals which contradict the effort in non-verbal ways which the "smart" students will understand, and so none of the "smart" students will ask questions even when invited to do so in a verbal way. A very sensitive professor may understand the non-verbal messages which the students offer to indicate that they are not with the presentation, and are in need of clarification, help, understanding, sympathy, and affirmations. The sensitive professor will know that the "smart" students do not want to be so vulnerable as to reveal their confusion by asking stupid questions. The smart professor will not ask "smart" students to expose their confusion; yet will be responsive to the students' needs by intuiting what they are, through a reading of their non-verbal non-formal communications. Students need to be taught and encouraged to ask questions. Asking questions is not the natural thing for a confused student to do. Asking questions is a very self-revealing act. Students who feel that they are in a threatening environment are not going to take the risk of revealing their ignorance, especially if they have not received clear and unambiguous signals that they can trust other students and teachers to continue to affirm students as persons regardless of what they reveal.
