How are we to feel comfortable with feelings which others have not confirmed as real, important, worthy of respect, appropriate, etc? If we are the only person we know to have experienced a feeling, how are we to regard ourself? We have a need to have others confirm our feelings by their letting us know that they have experience much the same feelings. Such confirmation need not imply that it is good that we have the feelings which have been in question. To imply that they are good is to imply that they may be bad. Feelings are not good or bad, they are. We are neither good or evil for having particular feelings. We are not to be regarded as responsible for our feelings, or to be required to control our feelings. To attempt to control feelings is to tie ourself in knots and to lead to violent behavior through frustrations occasioned by inhibitions. Affirmation makes no judgment about goodness, badness, evil, etc. Affirmation is an acceptance of reality as a beginning point. Affirmation is not either a blessing or damnation of what is. Affirmation does not say that what is should be eternal---or for everybody. To affirm unconfirmed feelings is to accept them as they are, and to accept the person whose they are---without judgment of any kind. To affirm unconfirmed feelings is to acknowledge their reality and to free others from the need to repress their feelings. To affirm unconfirmed feelings brings them to the level of shared reality. They are not thereby make objective in the sense of objects which many different people agree upon as being "out there". Yet confirmed feelings through the affirmations which confirm them become shared realities which are just as meaningful and significant as objects which are objectively real. Subjective realities which are meaningfully affirmed in human dialogue are just as important as objective realities which are the subjects of objective formal representations, measurements, computations, verifications, and modeling. People are likely to find more satisfaction, fulfillment, and personal meaning in affirmed feelings than in verified objects. Thus affirmations may be more essential to human life than verifications.
