The emotional violator may get away with subjecting the dedicated person to emotional emotional violence while continuing to demand that the dedicated person fulfill duties toward the emotional violator. The emotional violator may blame the emotionally immature behavior on environmental circumstances that may make life difficult. It would be closer to the truth to say that the emotionally immature behavior is encouraged by an unqualified dedication to duty which makes life easy for the emotional behavior. If the emotional violence has no undesirable consequences to the emotional violator and is associated positively with continued fulfillment of duty, then the emotional violator may reasonably regard emotional violence as a successful behavior pattern. The unqualified dedication to duty may teach that emotional violence is an effective coping pattern. The person who is unqualifiedly dedicated to duty will perform duty regardless of how they feel and what their desires are. Such a person will do violence to personal needs and desires in order to do service to duty. Such emotional violence to self serves as a model to be copied by the emotional violator. The emotional violator may feel that one should do to others as they do unto themselves, and so ignore the dedicated person's feelings and desires. Why should they consider the dedicated persons feelings and desires as important if they do not themselves consider their desires and feelings of any consequence? This is especially true of the dedicated person is a superior; e.g., a parent, teacher, or work supervisor. Dedication to duty needs to be balanced over against a dedication to respect one's own needs, feelings, and desires. To refuse a favor just because one does not feel like doing a favor can be very reasonable---because by such refusals will prompt others to seek ways to encourage the desire to do favors. Promoting positive feelings will encourage people to do favors because of how they feel, not because of any legalistic duty or technocratic logic. The law of love is powerful. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
