Moral indignation is an aspect of the techniques for promoting conformity. Unfortunately moral indignation is not systematic, logical, just, unbiased, etc. Moral indignation has to do with feelings, emotions, affection, etc. Moral indignation is of a kind with that which it is supposed to help control, and tends to violate the logic of the moral and ethical rules which are designed to help regulate disintegrative expressions of feelings, emotions, affection, etc. For this reason moral indignation has a tendency to occasion violence which masquerades as just punishment, even though it is directed at scape goats that are sacrificed even though they have played minor roles in occasioning the feelings and emotions of moral indignation. Moral indignation is not an expression of love. Love casts out fear. Moral indignation promotes fear. Love promotes reconciliation. Moral indignation occasions blockages to listening and dialogue. Love is forgiving. Moral indignation is most common among emotionally immature people. Emotionally immature people may be make morally indignant upon hearing allegations of loving behavior on the part of emotionally mature people who do what the indignant people want to do, but fear to do. Moral indignation may thus be an expression of the internalized tension between the law of love and the law of moralists, legalists, and ethical people. Those who generate that tension are thus heavily responsible for the moral indignation; more so than are the lovers, or the people who gossip about behavior of lovers. Gossips often play a critical role in generating moral indignation---for without their gossip the emotionally immature people would not be disturbed by stories of lovers' private behavior. Lovers are rarely responsible for moral indignation. Usually it is legalists, moralists, ethical people, and gossips, who occasion moral indignation. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
