We remember what most interests us. We do not have to work hard to remember what most interests us. Difficulty in remembering tends to be an indication of lack of interest. A conviction that it is important to remember is not the same as interest in that which is presumably important. It is possible to develop and use techniques for remembering people's names---even when we are not genuinely interested in them as whole persons. Such techniques are not without value, but it is desirable to seek ways to become more oriented towards people so that remembering their names comes naturally through interest, rather than artificially through the use of techniques. People's names serve as focal points about which we may cluster memories relating to them. Isolated names without clusters of memories are not likely to be remembered. If we are not interested in people as people, we are unlikely to acquire memories relating to them to be clustered about their names---and so we are unlikely to remember the isolated/unassociated name. Techniques to help remember names tend to focus upon compensating for such a lack of clusters of memories. Such techniques will be helpful to the extent to which they help facilitate the acquisition of human memories to cluster about the person as a whole individual. Remembering people's names may be regarded as a technique to facilitate the manipulation of people. Names become handles by which one can handle the people and move them. Such techniques are likely to do violence to people, and the people who are moved by them are likely at some deep level to resent such techniques---and respond at some level in a violent way. The motivation which is occasioned in people by how others use their names is likely to be highly dependent upon the motivation of the people who use the names. Manipulative uses of names are likely to elicit manipulative responses. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
