We may be asked one question, and covertly exchange it for a different question which is ostensible the same question---but which is easier or less painful to answer. By such substitutions we may avoid being answerable to the hardest questions of life. The blurring of the differences between basic questions tends to blur our understanding of the basic issues of life, and so generates some very basic confusion. Some of our arguments may originate in our giving answers to non-equivalent questions---while each thinking that we are both answering the same question, but each is answering a different question. Arguments about the impropriety of the answers will get nowhere, unless it is recognized that the different answers are in response to different questions. The focus must be upon a mutual awareness and mutual understanding of the questions---not of the answers. Each must understand the other person's perspective of the question and convince the other person that the perspective is honestly shared. Even a sincere effort may fail, due to differences in the meanings of words and in the previous experiences of those involved. Some of our most basic differences come from the differences in our "objective" and "subjective" tendencies. An objective person may take a question asked in the subjective mode to be an objective question---and respond in an objective way. A subjective person may take a question asked in the objective mode to be a subjective question---and respond in a subjective way. Such two different persons are unlikely to have mutual awareness and mutual understanding of the central questions which they ask. Their attempts to answer each other's questions are likely to generate mutual bafflement---as each will perceive the other's responses as quite inappropriate to the questions asked. Arguments about the answers will get them nowhere. They must recognize that their interpretations of a verbal query occasion non-equivalent questions in contrasting perceptual modes.
