The truth can be very disturbing, and they believe that they have the right to be protected from the truth which might disturb them --- because they believe they have the right not to be disturbed. For this reason speaking the truth may be taboo, and be severely punished. Truth may be repressed and honesty made illegal---in the interest of protecting immature people from disturbing perceptions. The constitutional rights of free communication (speech, assembly, press, petition, privacy) stand to protect the mature from the excessive demands of the immature for protection from the truth. Unfortunately, the rights of free communication tend to focus upon verbal communication, and only in recent years has the interpretation begun to move to symbolic action such as wearing black arm bands to school in protest against a meaningless war. Such symbolic action was reacted against because of its meaning, not because it directly interfered with other's rights. The meaning of the action was what was disturbing. The meaning challenged the collusions, delusions, and/or elusions of those who became aware of the action. The supreme court held the symbolic action was protected communication. Honest affective communications can be very threatening to the emotionally immature---and they may believe that they have a right to be protected from the disturbing effects upon them of emotionally honest communications. In the extreme they may believe that they have the right to be protected from the aware-ness that there are people who engage in honest affective communication---because the suspicion that there are people engaged in honest affective communication---can be very disturbing to some people. Such people may want to eliminate privacy---to eliminate their disturbing suspicion---since they have a right not to be disturbed. They seek to make honesty illegal. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
