The techniques and/or the accomplishment may be either objective or subjective in character. Objective technologies are commonly recognized because of their overt objective techniques and accomplishments which are subjected to objective study and evaluation. Subjective technologies are not so commonly recognized---because their subjective techniques and accomplishments can not be subjected to objective study and evaluation in subjectively meaningful ways. The reality of subjective technologies is particularly obscure to exclusively objective analysts---who are therefore especially vulnerable to subjective techniques of manipulation and control. Subjective technologies focus upon affecting human: emotions, passions, visions, fantasies, hopes, aspirations, desires, fears, sensuality, sexuality, decisions, and action---via subjective manipulation and control. Poets, musicians, novelists, dramatists, humorists, comedians, dancers, painters, sculptors and their leaders are successful only if they develop technical skills appropriate to their specialty; a subjective technology. Generally we are unconcerned about them having ulterior motives as they seek to subjectively affect us. Teachers, professors, salesmen, advertisers, preachers, counselors, politicians, lobbyists and doctors are effective only if they develop subjective technical skills appropriate to their efforts and we often wonder about their motivations and bias. Prostitutes, pornographers, extremist preachers, and the likes of Hitler---are successful only if they meet repressed subjective needs through the skillful use of subjective technologies. Subjective technologies often operate subconsciously to stabilize culture through taboos, tangential responses, excommunications, collusions, elusions, delusions, etc. Subjective technologies are not more humane than objective technologies, nor vice versa. All technologies are of the realm of I-It relationships through their focus upon manipulation and control to the exclusion of ambiguity, uncertainty, and of mutuality in vulnerability, respect, and political power. The realm of I-Thou relationships in meaningful intimacy is not enjoyed via techniques. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
