Upon closer examination all conditions are found to be processes in which the change which is taking place is not evident. Failures to recognize the practical implications of apparent conditions which are resource consumptive processes will lead to serious consequences. Technology has made many essential and unessential processes of former times appear to be conditions fulfilling basic human needs: water supply, sewage disposal, garbage disposal, farming, food preparation, transportation, shelter heating-cooling-illumination, etc. The proper functioning of a process comes to be regarded as a static condition---and its resource demands are forgotten. As a consequence water is needlessly left "on", automobile engines are uselessly left "on", furnaces are needlessly left "on", air conditioning systems are thoughtlessly left "on", and lights are left "on" when they serve no useful purpose. Resource consumptive processes are left in the "on" condition, as if the "on" condition was a static situation which made no demand. Such irresponsible behavior is not likely to be ended until what appear to be "conditions" are recognized as processes, processes which do make demands upon our communal resources. People are often viewed as "conditions", unchanging entities, rather than as processes. Human relationships become strained in situations in which the reality of process is not accepted, and relationships are regarded as static rather than dynamic. Human relationships as dynamic processes demand: human time, energy, attention, emotional involvement, intellectual focus, physical presence, etc. To view people and their relationships as conditions---is to presume that they can exist in the condition of "process" without changing or making demands. Such a view is misleading and tends to be destructive, as in the parallel case of natural resources in the physical realm. Many of our problems can be resolved only upon our changing our perspective their nature --- whether they pertain to "conditions" or "processes." (c) 2005 by Paul A.
