Guilt is negative in character; does not motivate helpful behavior; inhibits creativity and initiatives; sets the stage for expectations and excommunications which will occasion guilt in the next generation. Guilt is a form of affirmation of the propriety of expectations which have not been fulfilled. Thus a failure to fulfill the expectation that guilt will be experienced (upon failing to fulfill the proper behavior pattern) is a failure which may generate a sense of guilt for not experiencing of the "first-order" guilt. "Third- order" guilt may also be experienced by people escaping the entrapment of the way of guilt. To refuse to experience guilt may be taken as treason against the state of mind which affirms legalistic expectations; for guilt itself is the sacrificial offering given to such a state---as an act of worship. To refuse to make that offering may be interpreted as treason--just as the early Christians' refusal to make offerings to the Roman State's gods was interpreted as treason. People who refuse to be guilty---are thus often punished for refusing to punish themselves--- for their failure to conform to external expectations. The state is particularly threatened by those who have the audacity not to feel guilty about not feeling guilty--such people are so immoral as to constitute a grave threat to the morals of those about them. Such people may promote nonconformist initiatives and creativity--- which may overthrow the state of traditional expectations. When informal means of enforcing traditional expectations do not work, the state may bring to bear informal judicial procedures to coerce conformity under the cloak of justice--through actions which have the appearance of due process, but do not have the love which is an essential aspect of true justice with power.
