Through unfortunate circumstances the purpose of instruction is often perverted to: (1) Providing the instructors with income, prestige, self-esteem, audiences for indoctrination, victims for sadistic behavior or overt and/or subtle character, etc.; (2) Providing administrators with instructors to administer in order to be able to climb the professional ladder, (3) Providing trustees with an enterprise from which they may gain satisfaction as absentee land-lords. Each perversion due to unfortunate circumstances occasions future unfortunate circumstances which will be costly in many ways to those victimized. Amelioration of present perversions will cost less than amelioration of all the future perversions occasioned by present perversions---waiting will not make things get better, and they are likely to get worse in the absence of ameliorative efforts. The purpose of instruction will be served by focusing on the facilitation of learning on the part of students; not on THE requirement or certification of learning. Facilitation is a subjective process at heart, not an objective process. Ascertainment of the reality of facilitation involves subjective reports from students; reports which are likely to be repressed in a JUDGMENTAL, authoritarian, legalistic, exclusive, perfectionist, idealistic, moralistic, etc. type of environment. Such environments thus undermine the feed-back which instructors need in order to refine their efforts as facilitation learning; i.e., they undermine effective instruction. The people who formulate such environments to promote instruction engage in counter-productive efforts; regardless of how sincere, respected, sophisticated, intellectual, specialized, and powerful they may be. Intentions do not determine effects, even though they may play a very significant role. Intentions which lack integrity tend to effect undesirable results--- more often than integrative intentions effect desirable results.
