Snow pointed to the tip of an iceberg in his now famous lecture on the "Two Culture" dichotomy. The structure and extent of that iceberg is yet hidden below the troubled waters of our culture. As Snow suggested, the implications of the dichotomy are pervasive; yet we are hardly aware of all of them and/or their connection with the dichotomy. The origins of the dichotomy are obscure. The nature of the two culture dichotomy depends critically upon the perspective from which we view it. Our perspective depends upon which pole of the dichotomy dominates our own perception. Thus our understanding of the dichotomy depends upon the way in which is has affected us. We who seek to understand the dichotomy are in effect trying to understand the very process by which we try to understand the dichotomy. We can not seem to transcend the dichotomy until we understand it; we can not understand it until we transcend it. The dichotomy is a manifestation of our differing exclusive ways of understanding. We can not understand it because we approach it in our respective different but exclusive ways of understanding. Given this state of affairs we are obliged to clutch at glimmers of any transcendence and understanding of the dichotomy---by disavowing exclusivity as much as we can. A central feature of the dichotomy is the lack of communication between representatives of the poles of the dichotomy. Thus, a transcendence of the dichotomy is likely to involve taking steps which facilitate the restoration of communication. This is not likely to happen unless the restoration of communication is valued more highly than considerations which tend to undermine communication. That is to say, the facilitation of communication must be an ultimate concern to those who would help transcend the dichotomy. To be meaningful the communication between representatives of the poles of the dichotomy must be mutual, a dialogue in which no participant is dominant and all are participants are equally vulnerable. The communication must not be dominated by the way which is characteristic to either pole of the dichotomy. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
