When faithfulness to our highest values create disintegrative inhumane consequences we need to question our highest value; we need to avoid reaffirming them by assuming responsibility for the inhumane consequences. The person who has messed things up with the best of intentions and the worst of perspectives is not the proper person to assume responsibility for straightening things out. The self-appointed rectifier is likely to be a tragic character. Tragedy is occasioned by faithfulness to our highest values, not by any lack of dedication or application. Terrible things may be occasioned by lack of dedication and/or application---but such terrible things are not tragic unless they are the results of actions which were motivated by transcendent values. The technocratic way of coping occasions many problems/dilemmas in the technocratic society. When dedication to techniques is ultimate the technocrats are likely to be "responsible" for many tragedies---but they should not be asked to assume responsibility for their rectification. There are no techniques for correcting situations messed up by using techniques where techniques are inappropriate. Such tragedies call for the transcendence of the use of techniques, not for renewed dedication to old ways. Tragedies should occasion profound examinations of our highest values. The recognition of the tragedies suggests the perception of values which transcend those which directed the tragic behavior. Tragic consequences of faithfulness to high values calls for value clarification and decisions as to which values are truly transcendent. Too often dedication to openness and free communication is relegated secondary status and so occasions tragic consequences. Those people who are immersed in tragic situations need to seek insight from those people who are outside the tragic situation---else the tragedy will be perpetuated through faithfulness to the values which occasioned the tragedy. Consider Ireland, the Balkans, Israel, Vietnam. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
