A person may be influential by affecting many people---usually by affective communications, rarely by intellectual communication. Usually the degree of influence upon individual people is in some sense proportional to the personal investment per target person as made by the influencer. For this reason mass mailings tend not to influence recipients very much---there is little personal investment made by the mailer. Financial investment does not count for much as personal investment---unless the recipient is touched by a knowledge of the sacrifice made by the mailer. The affective impact depends upon a knowledge of sacrifice made by the person making the advance; nothing risked, nothing accomplished. The person who is unwilling to take personal risks is not likely to be influential. The person who seeks to manipulate others while remaining personally invulnerable will not influence others significantly, or in any meaningful way. The degree of influence depends upon the degree of personal involvement with the persons of concern. It is thus difficult to influence many people in a deep way. People who aspire to great power seek to influence many people in significant ways. They seek positions of leverage within government, business, education, etc. In order to gain satisfaction in their efforts they learn to see their efforts as being meaningful and significant. They can not maintain their devotion to their cause unless they see themselves as being influential. They are thus biased and unable to assess the import of their activities. There may be the appearance of influence in media coverage of their activities---but people may not have been personally moved. Their effects may be very superficial and transitory---making the headlines for a day, but not affecting anybody's heart. Meaningful influence involves positive emotions as well as intellect. This means that dialogue of various kinds will be part of the influential process---and that the influence will be reciprocal. Neither party will be left unchanged nor dominant. The mutual relationship will be the influential reality. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
