The fully rational person rationalizes the instincts to eat, socialize, and become sexually bonded. If reason is the aspect of man that makes him superior to other creatures, then reason must approve of all desires. Reason is reduced to logic, devoid of subjective considerations. Reason can be expressed only verbally, non-verbal communications being un-reasonable. Such a narrow conception of reason splits us and undermines even the logical aspect of our reason. We cease to have integrity and so can not reason well enough to develop holistic perceptions. Rationalization is likely to undermine deeply personal relationships, for rationalization will tend to try to control rather than follow such relationships. Trying to rationalize the private development of an intimate relationship will thus interfere with the growth of the relationship---objective considerations dominating subjective considerations, logic being objective in nature. Compulsive rationalization can end only as we learn to value non-logical reasons for decisions and actions. Such non-logical valuing is most likely to grow under the influence of supportive intimate relationships---the kind which compulsive rationalization is likely to undermine. The problem is of the kind which undermines implementing the solution to the problem. Such problems are often dilemmas which are resolved only with great patience and cooperative efforts to take advantage of each opportunity to its fullest. Each gain must be reinvested in the effort to make further advances towards resolving the compulsive tendency towards rationalization. The term "rationalization" is often used with negative connotations by those who are compulsive rationalizers. Such use is often an attempt by a person with a fault to justify them self by pointing to somebody having the same fault in larger measure. Such fault- finding is not likely to be helpful, no matter how much self-satisfaction may be gained thereby. It is more helpful to consider the origins of human motivation in their root forms, and to learn to value constructive human instincts apart form rationalizations of them. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
