Upon reflection some of the light is absorbed, and some reflected. Perhaps reflection and absorption depend upon the direction of polarization. In any case, the process is predictable in terms of how much of each of a very few alternatives occurs. The reflector makes no decisions to do anything novel, like returning apples or rats in place of photons. The internal conditions of the reflector are unlikely to have any affect upon the reflection process. The reflection process in physics tends to be a superficial process --- unless the photons' energies are sufficiently great to penetrate to the interior of the reflector and destroys some of its internal structure. In the latter case the nature of the reflections depends upon the nature of the internal destructive processes. Physicists using high energy particles study the fragments which come out of such destructive processes. They learn about the interior structure of tiny bits of matter by destroying those bits and noting the fragments which emanate from the destructive processes*. In human relationships transactional analysis involves situations much more complex than those of physical reflections. The mode of analysis of the physicist is entirely inappropriate. Interactions between people involve decisions and actions which flow from wholistic considerations and involve consequences which transcend conscious analysis. Novelty may enter in unpredictable ways. Consequences can not be calculated. The range of possible responses is extreme. Superficial human transactions take place verbally and at a relatively slow pace. At a deeper level transactions involve non-verbal signals of eye contact, facial expressions., minute body movements, gross body movements, postures etc. These transactions often occur very rapidly --- with many transactions in the non-verbal mode occurring for each verbal transaction. The non-verbal dialogue can thus out-run the verbal exchanges in its subtlety and significances --- even though the participants may not be conscious of the non-verbal dialogue, Such dialogues far transcend the simple reflections which are analyzed by physicists. To understand such human transactions thus requires wholistic ways of coping (c) 2005 by Paul A.
