The person who is a drug addict compulsively uses chemical solutions as a mean of coping. The chemical solutions are called drugs. They do not serve as the solution of the basic dilemmas, and so the basic dilemmas are not resolved. Chemical solutions do not resolve dilemmas, they accomplish technological objectives. The technological objective may be to feel "good" or to have uncontrolled visions. These technological objectives may appear very desirable to a person trapped in a technocratic society which is devoid of love and inhibits spontaneity and creativity. Achieving the technological objectives does not go to the root of the person's real dilemmas, loss of personal meaning due to the absence of love. Drug addicts may appear to be addicted to a specific drug. In reality they are addicted to the use of technologies to "solve" dilemmas---something that they share with many of their associates. Many people in a technocratic society are technique addicts. They compulsively turn to techniques as the exclusive way of coping, just as the drug addict turns to the chosen drug for a turn-on as a way of "coping". Drug addiction is a symptom of a society's technique addiction. The society cannot solve its drug addiction "problem" without meaningfully coping with it's technique addiction "problem." Technology cannot solve the technique addiction "problem." The solution of the technique addiction "problem" requires the transcendence of techniques, of means, to gain a vision of meaningful human relationships which are not dominated by techniques. Only such relationships can transform the participants and give meaning to their techniques by passing judgement upon them. The judgement is not a condemnation, but a realization of their limited powers. Thus the judgement is a fulfillment of techniques potentials, and also an act of overthrow of technique as objects of worship, idols. Techniques are not appropriate objects of ultimate concern. The technocratic society needs to seek for meaning beyond the techniques which are the focus of attention of its technocratic leaders. This cannot be done by any systematic procedure.
