Some people mature physically, emotionally, and sexually before they internalize technical values. In that instance, human experiences become the basis for making value judgements of technical ways of coping. Others mature intellectually, rationally, and technically before they internalize and value human relationships. In that instance, technical experiences become the measure of humane ways of coping. In each instance we develop a congruent value system---to give meaning to the value judgements of value. A value system is not a list of what is valued, it is the way in which we behave to support those things and relationships which we do value. The nature of our value system is thus dependent upon whether or not we internalized humane or technical values first; technically oriented persons tending to use technical means to support the relationships which they value---by giving themselves to those relationships with openness and love. The two culture dichotomy thus originates at least in part in the experiences of infancy and early childhood, if not even with the experiences of birth. The child who is encouraged to be open in human relationships matures rapidly and finds satisfaction in human intimacy. The child who does not find satisfaction and meaning in human intimacy experiences a stagnation in emotional/relational development, and upon maturation of intellectual abilities may develop those abilities in a way which (for the rest of his/her life) dominates all aspects of life; including the way all others are perceived---be they people, animals, objects, concepts, words, relationships, or spirits. The two culture dichotomy cannot be bridged through intellectual discourse between adults, because the dichotomy involves in central ways realities which are fundamentally emotional/affective in nature. Such realities cannot be known/understood through exclusively intellectual analysis. The two culture dichotomy will be bridged when people of all ages balance their emotional/affective and their intellectual/rational maturation so that neither aspect of their being plays such a dominant role as to exclude the other from playing its appropriate role.
