The sensory oriented people interact with their living environments more than do the thought oriented people. Much of the interaction of thought oriented people is via abstract symbols and representations. Their senses are used to receive symbolic information, not primary non-representational stimuli. The sensory people are more aware of the full range of sounds, smells, colors, textures, movements, visual patterns, tastes, and temperature changes, than are the thoughtful people. Thoughtful people are often so lost in thought, as to be unaware of what is happening around them. They create their own world of thoughts, and live in it. The dichotomy between sensory and thought orientation is often promoted by exclusive value systems. Some people look on sensory data as being relatively unimportant compared to abstract thought, and vice versa. Some even look upon enjoyment of sensory data as evil, and to be avoided; although they praise the enjoyment of sophisticated thought patterns. Thus, expressions of affection are inhibited, and sexual growth prevented. Education has often tended to promote intellectual maturity at the expense of emotional maturity. This flows from the relative values assigned to sensitivity to sensory experiences, and to sophistication in abstract thought. People who lose touch with their environment are likely to go mad and behave in violent ways. Inattention to sensory data is part of losing touch with the environment. Those who have lost touch with the environment through inattention to it are likely to be indifferent to it. Indifference, rather than hate, is the opposite of love. Indifference towards the environment leads to abuse of the environment. Those who approach the environment only in abstract terms are not likely to respect it; just as a man who approaches a woman only in abstract terms is not likely to respect her as a whole person. True respect involves acceptance of the other as a whole with integrity, not exclusively as an object of analysis and understanding. True love includes a sensory orientation towards our others.
